The Imam’s Position in the Funeral Prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20173 )
Q 1: How should the imam stand in the funeral prayer if the deceased are two men and one woman?
Vol. 1 : The two men stand in the row closest to the imam, and the woman is placed behind them in the row closest to the qiblah. This is indicated by what was narrated by Yahya ibn Subayh who said: "Hammam, the freed slave of al-Harith ibn Nawfal, narrated to me" , which was reported by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i with a sound chain. The imam stands opposite the heads of the two men and opposite the middle of the woman, so that the middle of the woman is aligned with the heads of the two men. This is indicated by what was reported by al-Tirmidhi in (al-Jami') from Hammam from Abu Ghalib who said: Mishkat al-Masabih 1679 . And Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah reported something similar in their Sunans, and al-Tirmidhi said: "It is a good hadith." Also indicating this is what the group of scholars narrated from Samurah ibn Jundub Bulugh al-Maram 580 , and al-Tirmidhi said: "It is a good, sound hadith." And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

That he attended the funeral of Umm Kulthum and her son, so he placed the boy closest to the imam, but she objected to that. Among the people were Ibn Abbas, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Abu Qatadah, and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them), and they said: “This is the Sunnah.”
Nafi‘ Abu Ghalib said he prayed along with Anas b. Malik at a man's funeral and he stood opposite his head. Then some people brought along the bier of a woman of Quraish and said, “Abu Hamza (The kunya of Anas b. Malik, the Prophet’s servant), pray over her,” and he stood opposite the middle of the bier. Al-‘Ala’ b. Ziyad said to him, “Thus did I see God’s messenger do. He stood over the bier in the same position as you did in relation to her and in the same position as you did in relation to the man.” He replied, “That is so.”
