The Woman’s Prayer over the Funeral

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The ninth question of Fatwa No. ( 1752 )
Q9: Is it permissible for a woman to participate with men in the prayer over the funeral?
A9: The principle regarding the acts of worship that Allah legislated in His Book or that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified in his Sunnah is that they are general for both males and females, unless there is evidence specifying them for males or females. The funeral prayer is among the acts of worship legislated by Allah the Exalted and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), so the address includes both men and women. However,
it is generally the case that men are the ones who perform it directly, due to women’s frequent staying in their homes. Therefore, if it happens that only women are present for the funeral, they pray over it and fulfill the obligatory duty toward it. It is established that A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) ordered that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas be brought to her so she could pray over him, and we do not know that any of the Companions objected to her. This indicates that a woman participates with men in the prayer over the funeral, and she may pray over it alone for reasons that call for it, just as that is the case for men. However, when they pray the funeral prayer or any other prayer with men, their rows are to be behind the rows of the men. It is also established that they prayed over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) just as the men prayed over him, but they do not accompany the funerals to the burial because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
