Leaving off the adhan and restricting oneself to the iqamah only

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20519 )
Q: We are a group of employees in a government department. We perform some of the prayers in a private prayer hall where congregational prayer is held. However, we do not call the adhan for the congregational prayer. The reason is that we hear the adhan, and we restrict ourselves to only the iqamah. We ask you to clarify the following matters: First: Is it prescribed for us to leave off the adhan and restrict ourselves to only the iqamah ? Second: If the device from which the adhan is called in the mosque malfunctions, or if the electricity is cut off, what is the ruling for us, since we—or some of us—rely on the mosque’s adhan? And is it prescribed for women to call the adhan and iqamah? Third: If a person or a group of people enter the mosque and find that the congregation has finished, are they required to call the adhan and iqamah, or are they required to call only the iqamah, as people do today? Fourth: If a person sleeps and misses several prayers, what is prescribed for him regarding the adhan and iqamah? Fifth: Is it permissible for a woman to fast after childbirth if her bleeding stops before she completes forty days, and to pray as well?
A: First: It is obligatory for you to pray in the mosque near your workplace
as long as you are able to do so and you hear the adhan; because congregational prayer is obligatory for men in the mosques, and it is not permissible to neglect it. As for the woman, it is not prescribed for her to call the adhan or the iqamah at all. Second: Precise means of timing have become available in this era. So if you do not hear the adhan for some reason, relying on the clock here and going to the mosque at the time of prayer is what is obligatory. Third: The adhan is a collective obligation. So if the mu’adhdhin calls the adhan in the mosque, and then the prayer is performed, and another group comes to make up the prayer, it is prescribed for them to call only the iqamah, and it is not prescribed for them to call the adhan. Fourth: If he is in a town, it is sufficient for him to call the iqamah for each prayer he missed. But if he is in a desert or a place where no one calls the adhan, it is prescribed for him to call one adhan and the iqamah for each prayer. Fifth: If a woman who is experiencing post-natal bleeding sees purity before the completion of forty days, she should take a full ritual bath, pray, and fast, and her husband may have intercourse with her; because she is in the status of a pure woman after the bleeding stops. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
