Q: I ask your Eminence about the meaning of the hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and others from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Prayer in congregation is equivalent to twenty-five prayers (offered alone). If he prays in a jungle, and performs its bowing and prostrations perfectly, it becomes equivalent to fifty prayers (in respect of reward).الصلاة في جماعة تعدل خمسًا وعشرين صلاة، فإذا صلاها في فلاة فأتم ركوعها وسجودها بلغت خمسين صلاة
Sunan Abi Dawud 560
. Abu Dawud said: 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn Ziyad said regarding this hadith:
The prayer of a man in the desert is multiplied over his prayer in congregationصلاة الرجل في الفلاة تضاعف على صلاته في الجماعة
. He then cited the hadith. The Shaykh Al-Albani authenticated this hadith in the Sahih of Abu Dawud . Al-Shawkani mentioned in *Al-Nayl* the wisdom behind the desert being singled out for this distinction. Some people have used this hadith as an argument for leaving prayer with the congregation or in the mosques, and instead praying alone in the desert. This is because one of the teachers teaches in the province of al-Hanakiyah , which is approximately (107) kilometers from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah . When he returns from the school to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah , it is the time of the Zuhr or 'Asr prayer. He passes by some mosques on his way, leaves them, and prays in the desert in order to obtain this reward. I hope your Eminence will clarify this matter. May Allah reward you with the best reward in this world and the Hereafter. He is the One who is capable of that.

A: The hadith mentioned is for the one who is in a desert far from the mosques. As for the one who is near the mosques and hears the adhan, it is obligatory for him to pray in the mosque with the Muslims, and it is not permissible for him to pray alone; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأت فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:308
, and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the blind man who asked him to grant him a dispensation to pray in his home, to relieve the hardship he faced on his way to the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Do you hear summons (adhan)? He said: Yes. He said: I do not find any permission for you.هل تسمع النداء؟ قال: نعم، قال: فأجب؛ فإني لا أجد لك رخصة
Sunan Abi Dawud 552Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
