Replacing the Fajr adhan with takbir and tahlil in Ramadan
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 19178 )
Q 1: In the month of Ramadan some of the imams of the mosques do not call the adhan for Fajr; some of them use a bell, and some of them do not do anything at all , and conversely, at the time of suhur they do not call the adhan but rather recite tahlil, or recite the Qur'an, or play a cassette of tajwid. What did the righteous Salaf do?
A 1: The adhan: It is an announcement of the entry of the time of prayer or its approach, such as the first adhan for Fajr, and nothing else takes its place; because it is one of the matters that are based on the text (taqdiri), it is not permissible to add to its words, nor to subtract from them, nor to replace it with other means. And whoever substitutes a bell for it has imitated the Christians in that, and contradicted what the Muslims are upon, and committed a great evil. It is forbidden to
make the bell a substitute for the adhan, or to leave it off entirely; because it is a collective obligation (fard kifayah), and if the people of a town leave it off, they have sinned by leaving it off. And because it is one of the apparent symbols of Islam, it is not permissible to abolish it. And because leaving it off entirely is evidence of taking the matters of religion lightly. Likewise, if one makes dhikr and supplications, or the recitation of the Qur'an, a substitute for the adhan, he has innovated in the religion of Allah an innovation for which Allah has not sent down any authority, and it is rejected against him; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1718a . The principle is that the recitation of the Qur'an, seeking forgiveness, and dhikr are done after the adhan and the performance of the greeting of the mosque, each person reading alone and with a voice that does not affect the worshippers. This is what the righteous Salaf were upon. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
