The questioner : It was said: A full brother of mine had a breastfed infant, and his mother underwent a surgical operation, so my mother breastfed him. Is it permissible for him to marry my daughter or the daughters of one of his other uncles, or not?

The Shaykh : If this child has breastfed from your mother five times or more, then he becomes her son. If he is your mother’s son, then he is your brother and your brothers’ brother. Accordingly, it is not permissible for him to marry any of your daughters or your brothers’ daughters, because he would be their paternal uncle. He also does not marry any of your sisters or your sisters’ daughters, because he is their brother and their maternal uncle. This is if the breastfeeding is five times or more within the breastfeeding period, which is either two years according to the well-known view, or before weaning according to the second view. If the breastfeeding is less than five times, then it has no effect, and the breastfed child does not become the son of the one from whom he breastfed, whether male or female. In that case, it is permissible for him to marry your daughters, because he is not their maternal uncle.

The questioner : The following message was sent by a Sudanese listener; she did not clarify her name.
