The questioner : I married a girl from outside the family, and I have had daughters and sons from her. Is it permissible for my maternal uncle’s son, whom I was breastfed by his mother, to marry one of my daughters, or is that forbidden, O honorable Shaykh? He is considered my brother through my mother via breastfeeding, and consequently, he is my daughter’s paternal uncle via breastfeeding. I ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Yes, this man, from whose mother you were breastfed in a manner that is forbidden and in which the conditions were fulfilled, it is not valid for him, or it is not permissible for him, to marry any of your daughters. This is because he is their paternal uncle, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful. يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
The women forbidden by blood relation are seven, and Allah the Exalted mentioned them in His saying:
Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father's sisters, your mother's sisters, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters
[An-Nisa 4:23]
These seven, their counterparts in breastfeeding are forbidden to a man. Thus, it is forbidden for a man to marry his mother via breastfeeding, his daughter via breastfeeding, his sister via breastfeeding, his brother’s daughter via breastfeeding, his sister’s daughter via breastfeeding, his paternal aunt via breastfeeding, and his maternal aunt via breastfeeding, based on the hadith we referred to earlier. Accordingly, your maternal uncle’s son, from whose mother you were breastfed in a forbidden manner in which the conditions were fulfilled, it is not permissible for him to marry any of your daughters, or the daughters of your daughters, or the daughters of your sons. Yes.

The questioner : The listener is Salah Sulayman from Sudan.
