Q: We inform Your Eminence that there are female students in the literacy program in the region who perform the adhan aloud, as well as the iqamah aloud. They have been informed by their female classmates at the school that this is not permissible, so we ask Your Eminence to respond to us with a fatwa so that we may respond to them and post this fatwa at the school today, if Allah wills. This is because they perform the prayer in congregation, with one of them leading them.
A: The adhan and iqamah are obligatory only for men, while for women there is no adhan or iqamah; due to the fear of fitnah (temptation) caused by their voices. The Companions in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were the ones who called the adhan, and the women did not call the adhan or establish the prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
