The ruling on one whose mind is occasionally impaired
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17861 )
Q 1: I have a grandfather who is approximately one hundred and fifty years old. About a year ago, he began to lose his mind at times and became unable to move from the bed, and consequently became unable to perform the obligatory prayer . It is known that impurity from the two passages is continuous, and everything that falls under him, whether feces or urine. The question is: Is the prayer obligatory upon him or not? It is known that the loss of his mind does not occur except at some times and is not continuous. So please issue a ruling on this, may Allah reward you with good?
A 1: If your grandfather’s mind is present, even if only at some times, it is obligatory for him to pray according to his ability; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Taghabun 64:16] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 7288 . So your grandfather must purify himself with water; if he is unable, he performs dry ablution with clean earth; if he is unable to
perform dry ablution with clean earth, he prays without ablution or dry ablution. He must pray standing; if he cannot, then sitting; if he cannot, then on his side; if he cannot, then lying on his back; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Taghabun 64:16] and because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani) narrated by al-Bukhari in (his Sahih). al-Nasa'i added: . As for the times when his mind is impaired, he owes nothing in them, neither performing the prayer nor making it up. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
