The Prayer of One Who Has Lost His Mind Due to Illness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 14500 )
Q 1: My father passed away about nine months ago from a malignant disease. My father did not pray on most of his days in the four months before his death, because he suffered from a type of hallucination and forgetfulness due to the treatment and the illness . When he was awake and in good health, we would say to him: “Pray, O my father,” and he would say: “I cannot.” And if he did pray, he might fall asleep or forget the time of the prayer and its type, even if we informed him before he started, he would forget and fold the prayer mat and say: “I have prayed.” So does he have a sin? And do his children have a sin, because they have not yet given charity in place of this prayer, especially the last two months, when his health deteriorated terribly and he did not pray in them, and that was due to their negligence?
Knowing that this man has enough money and more to give charity for the prayer, and for two months of Ramadan that he did not fast due to the treatment, and how much is the charity for four months of prayer and two months of Ramadan?

A 1: If your father was of unsound mind during the illness, then prayer and fasting are not obligatory upon him, because sound mind is the condition for legal responsibility, and there is no sin upon him or upon you, and no expiation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
