Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 16376 )
Q 3: What should I do about a prayer I have not performed for a past period, approximately four years ?
A 3: If you left one of the five prayers due to forgetfulness, or because of sleep, or for something you thought was an excuse for leaving it, then it is obligatory for you to hasten to make it up. Even if you left it a long time ago, your obligation is not cleared except by making it up. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, let him pray it when he remembers it. There is no expiation for it other than that.من نسي صلاة أو نام عنها فليصلها إذا ذكرها، لا كفارة لها إلا ذلك
Sunan ad-Darimi 2:45
However, if you left it intentionally or out of negligence, then you must repent to Allah for that, and there is no making it up for you. This is because leaving it intentionally is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), even if you did not deny its obligation, according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
It was narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih), and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Imam Ahmad and the people of the Sunan with a sound chain of narration.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
