Q. Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from Al-Muqaddim Hasan ibn Husayn
Al-Asmari, the officer in charge of religious affairs at Taif Al-Huda Hospital, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, with number (1476) and date 19/2/1419 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows: The patient (M. A.) came to us at the Al-Rahab Medical Rehabilitation Center, where he informed us that he suffered from inflammation in his hand due to tayammum. We asked the preventive medicine consultant in the program to meet the patient, and he answered us with the attached letter, stating that the patient suffers from quadriplegia and uses only his left hand for tayammum, but the fingers are bent toward the palm, which causes particles of earth to get under his nails and remain there for a long time, leading to a fungal infection of the nails. Our question, may Allah preserve you: In this case, is he excused from tayammum? Or is it permissible to use the back of the hand?
A : There is no harm in the aforementioned person using the back of his hand for tayammum if he is harmed by using the palm; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Taghabun 64:16] , and His saying the Exalted: [Al-Baqarah 2:286]
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
