The Ruling on Letting Garments Hang Below the Ankles

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q23: How do we respond to those who say: Isbal is permissible as long as the one doing it did not do it out of arrogance?
A23: Letting the lower garment, the shirt, the trousers, and similar clothing hang below the ankles is absolutely forbidden, whether one intends arrogance and self-admiration or not; because it is a place for such things, and because of the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari, and this does not include a lower garment or similar that reaches the ankles, except that it sometimes hangs loose until it becomes below the ankles if one is negligent about it, by not touching it or checking it; because it is not a place for arrogance and pride. So from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)
he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah will not look on the Day of Judgment at him who drags his robe (behind him) out of pride." Abu Bakr said "One side of my robe slacks down unless I get very cautious about it." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "But you do not do that with a pride."من جرّ ثوبه خيلاء؛ لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة فقال أبو بكر : أحد شقي إزاري يسترخي إلا أن أتعاهد ذلك منه، فقال: إنك لست ممن يفعل ذلك خيلاء
Sahih al-Bukhari 3665
narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i and al-Tirmidhi . It is possible to reconcile the two previous hadiths regarding the punishment of the one who lets his garment hang by saying: If one intends arrogance by letting his garment hang, his punishment is that Allah the Exalted will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection, nor speak to him, nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment. And if he did not intend arrogance by it, his punishment is that he will be punished with fire for what hangs below the ankles, because when the ruling and the cause differ, the absolute is not restricted by the qualified, as is the case here.
