The Ruling on Letting Garments Hang Below the Ankles

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He says: What is the ruling on one who lengthens his garment below his ankle and drags it, without arrogance or pride? Is this forbidden, especially since many people do not intend that?
Answer: Dragging the clothes, dragging the garments, is a blameworthy act in all cases, even if the person claims he did not intend pride; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited this with an absolute prohibition. And if it is done out of pride, the sin becomes greater and more severe. The common reality is that the one who drags his clothes does so out of arrogance, pride, and self-importance, even if he claims otherwise. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Beware of letting the garment hang, for it is of arrogance
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
, and he did not say: "If it is done out of pride," but he stated it absolutely. Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: There are three to whom Allah will not speak and at whom He will not look on the Day of Resurrection, and whom He will not declare pure, and they will have a painful punishment. I asked: Who are they, Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He repeated it three times. I asked: Who are they. Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He replied: The one who wears a trailing robe, the one who takes account of what he gives, and the one who produces a ready sale of a commodity by false swearing.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4087Sahih (Al-Albani)
Muslim narrated it in his Sahih, and he did not say: "If it is done out of pride." This indicates the prohibition of isbal in all cases. So dragging the clothes below the ankle, whether trousers, a lower garment, a shirt, or a coat, is all blameworthy, even if he claims he did not intend pride, and even if in reality he did not intend it. It is obligatory for him to raise them; because dragging them is a means to pride, and a means to defiling them and making them dirty. It is also extravagance, waste, and squandering of money without right.
So it is obligatory for the Muslim to raise his clothes and all his garments so that they are not below the ankle, acting in accordance with the guidance and direction of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for what is narrated in the hadith that he said to Abu Bakr when he said:
My lower garment becomes loose. He said: You are not one who does thatإن إزاري يرتخي.
meaning: out of pride, this does not mean permission to drag the clothes, no. Rather, his (peace and blessings be upon him) intention was that if it becomes loose from you, O Abu Bakr, it is not out of pride, but rather it happens to you, it becomes loose from you, and that does not harm you; because it is something that occurs and then you correct it and fix it. So the believer, if his garment becomes loose due to a defect that occurs to him, and then he corrects it and strives to raise it, that does not harm him. This is unlike the one who intentionally drags it, for this leads to pride and arrogance, or other evil and bad intentions. As for what he intended, or what he claimed, that he did not intend arrogance, his appearance is an appearance of arrogance; an appearance of pride and an appearance of a blameworthy act, so it is not permissible. And the hadiths indicate that this type of act is called arrogance, even if the person did not intend it:
Beware of letting the garment hang, for it is of arrogance
This is how it came in the hadith of Jabir ibn Sulaym, and it is an authentic hadith. Yes.
