A Collection of Vows

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q1: My wife has been afflicted with a mental illness, and she vowed that if Allah the Mighty and Majestic would heal her, she would fast on Mondays and Thursdays and the white days. She is now confused about her situation, and fasting is difficult for her; the illness continues to affect her to the present time. Also, her menstrual cycle sometimes prevents her from fasting on Mondays, Thursdays, and the white days, and it continues with her until she is unable to fast on those days. She is also unable to fast when she is pregnant and burdened by the hardship of her children. I ask you to answer this fatwa, O your Excellencies! What expiation is required of her regarding this problem? And if she is required to fast, how does she make up the fasts when her menstrual cycle or pregnancy, along with the hardship of the children, prevents her?
A1: If she has been completely healed from the aforementioned illness, then it is obligatory for her to fulfill the vow she made conditional upon healing, which is fasting on Mondays and Thursdays of every week and fasting the white days of every month, even if it entails a tolerable hardship. If the days of Monday, Thursday, and the white days coincide with her menstrual period, she breaks her fast, and nothing is required of her, because that does not fall under the vow; it is considered an exception. However, if the illness still recurs and she has not been completely healed from it, then she is not obligated to fulfill her vow.
