Q: We are a group of students of knowledge who wish to study the rules of tartil in the recitation of Warsh via al-Azraq, and the mushafs we have are likewise. However, our study requires evaluating the rules in the margin of the mushaf so that we may recall them during recitation, and recite the Qur'an as it was revealed, in accordance with the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Muzzammil 73:4] . An example of this is the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Yusuf 12:11] , so we place a line under "ta'manna" and write opposite it in the margin: it contains ishmal and rasm.
and the Romans. 1 - So is it permissibleto write in the margins of the mushaf? Knowing that we have read in the conclusion of the King Fahd Mushaf what Shaykh al-Hudhayfi transmitted regarding the consensus of the Salaf on not writing anything in the mushaf other than the Qur'an. We have also noticed in this mushaf that the number of verses in the surahs is not written for the aforementioned reason. If that is not permissible, what is the method by which we can learn the rules of tartil? 2 - Is it permissible to write the reasons for the revelation of some verses and their brief interpretation in the margins of the mushafs, or not? 3 - Is it permissible to place some numbers next to some verses (words) of the Qur'an for the purpose of counting them and noting their unusual features in script and wording? An example of what we do is placing the number (3) above the word (ayy) in the verse[Ar-Rahman 55:31]indicating its presence in three places in the Qur'an.
A : The principle upon which the practice of the Ummah has proceeded is to keep the Book of Allah the Exalted free from any addition to it, and the circulation of the mushaf remains with its script as it is circulated among
the Muslims without addition or reduction. For this reason, we advise you to leave the aforementioned annotations on the mushaf, and you can write what you need on separate papers that indicate the name of the surah and the number of the verse, thus combining the preservation of the Book of Allah the Exalted with noting what benefits you and helps you in understanding it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
