Etiquettes of Recitation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18676 )
Q: What are the etiquettes of reciting the Noble Qur'an ?
A : Reciting the Qur'an has etiquettes, among which are: 1 - That the reciter's deed be pure for the face of Allah, with no showing off or seeking fame, and that he not seek a wage for it; for his worship is a means of drawing near to Allah. 2 - Among the etiquettes of reciting the Qur'an is that he seeks refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan
at the beginning of his recitation, and he recites "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" if he begins his recitation from the start of the chapter, except for Surat al-Tawbah. 3 - It is recommended that the one who recites the Qur'an be in a state of wudu' when he recites; if his recitation is from a mushaf, it is obligatory for him to be in a state of wudu'; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
no-one should touch the Qur'an unless he was pureلا يمس القرآن إلا طاهر
Muwatta Malik 15:1
. 4 - It is desirable that he sit when reciting the Qur'an in a good posture and good clothing, facing the qiblah, and in a respectable place befitting the Qur'an. 5 - It is recommended that he recite with humility, awe, deliberation, reflection, and contemplation of its verses, with his heart and senses focused on what he is reciting from the Qur'an, and he should not interrupt the recitation with human speech without need. 2 - It is recommended that he recite the Qur'an with a good voice, clarifying the letters and vowel movements, and paying attention to the rules of tajwid according to his ability. 7 - If someone is hearing him while he is reciting the Qur'an or praying, he should not disturb them by raising his voice or disrupt the one who is praying. 8 - The reciter should not mumble the Qur'an so that what he says is not understood, nor should he drag it out and extend it in a way that distorts its words and takes it away from the intended meaning of its recitation, but rather he should take a middle path between the two. 9 - He should not recite the Qur'an with the melodies of singing, such as the melodies of the people of open sinfulness, nor with the chanting ofthe Christiansnor the wailing of the monks, for all of that is not permissible.
10 - And among the etiquettes of recitation is that he holds back from reciting if he yawns until the yawning passes; out of reverence for Allah; for he is addressing and conversing with his Lord, and yawning is from Shaytan. 11 - And among the etiquettes of recitation is that he stops at a verse of mercy and asks Allah of His bounty, and that he stops at a verse of punishment and warning and seeks refuge in Allah from it, and at a verse of glorification he glorifies, and this is in other than the obligatory prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
