Reciting Surat al-Fatihah or Ya-Sin over the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 16953 )
Q 3: Is it permissible to recite Surat al-Fatihah or Ya-Sin over the deceased, and is the deceased man placed before the woman if they die at the same time and are carried in one funeral procession?
A 3 : It is not prescribed to recite al-Fatihah over the deceased; because there is no evidence for this
evidence, and as for reciting Surat Ya-Sin, some scholars have held it to be recommended to recite it for the dying person; based on the hadith:
Recite it over your dead, meaning (Ya-Sin)اقرؤوها على موتاكم يعني (يس)
narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah and others, from Ma'qil ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Recite Surah Ya-Sin over your dying menاقرؤوا يس على موتاكم
Sunan Abi Dawud 3121
This is a weak hadith that does not serve as proof, and among those who graded it weak was al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: (There is no sound hadith in this chapter), as transmitted by Ibn Hajar in his book (al-Talkhis al-Habir). And Allah knows best. As for reciting over the funeral, it is a religious innovation that is not permissible; due to the lack of evidence for it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
There is no order in the procession between the funeral of a man and the funeral of a woman; rather, the man is placed before the woman when praying over their two funerals, so that the man's funeral is closest to the imam, and the woman is behind the man's funeral closest to the qiblah, with her center opposite his head. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
