J 3 : It is prescribed for those present at the burial of the deceased to participate in burying him, and it is recommended to throw three handfuls of dirt from the direction of his head;
For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over a funeral, then went to the grave of the deceased from the head side and threw three handfuls of earth on itلأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى على جنازة ثم أتى إلى قبر الميت من جهة رأسه فحثى عليه ثلاثًا
, narrated by Ibn Majah and what was narrated by 'Amir ibn Rabi'ah
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over 'Uthman ibn Maz'un, said Allahu Akbar over him four times, then went to the grave and threw three handfuls of earth on it while standing at the headأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى على عثمان بن مظعون فكبر عليه أربعًا ثم أتى القبر فحثى عليه ثلاث حثيات وهو قائم عند رأسه
, narrated by al-Daraqutni , and this was the practice of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), as it is established from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he buried Zayd ibn Thabit , he threw three handfuls of dirt on his grave and said: "Thus knowledge departs." This was mentioned by Ibn Qudamah in al-Mughni.
