Is it true that throwing soil on the deceased three times is a religious innovation, and that one should not step on an adjacent grave with his foot?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : One of the students of knowledge told us, while we were in the cemetery, that throwing soil three times is a religious innovation, and he forbade the one who is burying the deceased from placing his foot on the adjacent grave. What is the truth of this?

The Shaykh : Yes. As for the prohibition of placing one's foot on the adjacent grave, this is correct, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
He forbade stepping on a grave نهى أن يوطأ على القبر

As for the handfuls of soil, they are for participating in the burial. Many scholars have recommended them, and a hadith has been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this, but some scholars have graded it as weak. One should not criticize those who do this, because it is a matter of independent legal reasoning, and our scholars still do this, based on the opinion of some scholars that the three handfuls are recommended.
And I advise our brother students not to be hasty in matters that involve other things, because they may criticize what they think is wrong, when it is not wrong. Being deliberate in matters is better than being hasty and rushing. For this reason, some of the Salaf said to the students of knowledge: "Do not rush for success and honor". This means: do not rush in matters in order to seek success and honor, for success and honor will come to you when you have grown in knowledge, known what others do not know, and begun to teach people. Yes.
The time has ended, and this meeting ends here. Until another meeting, if Allah wills, next month. May Allah bring us and you to Ramadan while we are in goodness, safety, security, and faith. And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
The student: Before Ramadan.

The Shaykh : Yes, before Ramadan. In it are Rajab and Sha'ban.
The student: I would like to point out, with the permission of Allah the Exalted, that there will be a lecture at the end of the month, on the 27th, by Shaykh Sa'id ibn Musfir al-Qahatani. This may be announced soon, with the permission of Allah the Exalted.
May Allah reward our Shaykh with the best reward.
