Paying off the debt of your deceased brother: Does it benefit him?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 12648 )
Q: My brother passed away in a car accident about eight years ago. He had debts, and I paid them off on his behalf. He owed one person a sum, and I paid it, but a small amount remained. It has been a while, and I have not been able to pay it off to this day. Will my deceased brother be affected by the delay in payment? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: The rights of people over one another are based on strictness, so it is obligatory for you to hasten to pay off the remaining debt of your brother, unless the owner of the right permits it. You are to be commended for your effort in paying off your brother's debt, and this
is an act of righteousness and maintaining family ties. May Allah bless you and help you to pay off what remains. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
