Q: The person in charge of the mosque in the neighborhood where I live here in Britain announced that there would be a funeral prayer at the time of the midday prayer tomorrow, and he urged the people, meaning the worshippers present at that time, to attend and pray the funeral prayer. There is nothing wrong with that so far. Then one of the worshippers stood up and spoke to the people, reminding the worshippers of the incident that occurred to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions one day. It is that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Companions, who were sitting with him: Who among you is fasting today? So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am, O Messenger of Allah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Companions: Who among you gave charity today? So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am, O Messenger of Allah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Companions: Who
among you attended a funeral today? So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am, O Messenger of Allah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No person in whom these three things are gathered is guaranteed Paradise. Or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. And from here, the speech was still by this man who stood speaking after the imam of the mosque announced the funeral prayer for tomorrow. The man said: And based on this hadith, I urge you, meaning the worshippers, to attend tomorrow for the funeral prayer, and to fast tomorrow, and to give charity tomorrow; because as you heard, and he was addressing the worshippers with this, that no person in whom these three qualities are gathered is guaranteed Paradise, as reported in the hadith. And by that, I understood and the people (the worshippers) understood that it is obligatory, or at least that it is recommended, for one who wants to attend the funeral prayer to be fasting on that day, and to have given charity or to give charity on that day, so that he may obtain the great reward, which is Paradise, if Allah wills, as reported in the hadith. And the question is: Is the action of this man who spoke after the imam and his request and urging of the people to fast and give charity on the day they perform the funeral prayer, is this action in accordance with the Sunnah? And is seeking to fast and give charity on the day a person intends to perform the funeral prayer from the Sunnah and in accordance with the Shari'ah? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: It is not denied in the Shari'ah to combine between two types of righteousness or more;
such as charity and fasting, but it is not prescribed for one who attends the prayer over the deceased and accompanies the funeral to be fasting and giving charity for the sake of that; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order that, and because Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not fast and did not give charity for the sake of accompanying the funeral, but rather it coincided that he was accompanying it while he was fasting and giving charity on the same day. So what this preacher mentioned is not correct, and you must point that out to him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
