Tayammum as a substitute for istinja'
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 13842 )
Q1: When we go out for training in the desert, most
of the soldiers are content with tayammum on the grounds of the cold, and sometimes on the grounds of the difficulty of istinja' due to the lack of privacy in open areas, and since some of them consider istinja' to be one of the obligatory conditions of wudu'. We ask for a detailed explanation of this ruling.
A1: Istinja' is not obligatory when performing wudu', but it is obligatory after a state of ritual impurity from urination or defecation. It is not permissible to perform tayammum while water is available, even if the weather is cold, unless one fears death from using the water. Likewise, it is not permissible to perform tayammum due to the lack of a place to conceal oneself, and a person can have one of his colleagues cover him with a cloak or the like when necessary. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
