The Practice of Making Food on the Tenth of Muharram
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some women in the region of ( Hufar al-Batin ) every year, and especially in the month of Muharram on its tenth day, prepare food for women and gather them in the house where this food, called (al-Fatimah), is prepared. They also prepare incense and have the women use it, and prepare henna (khidab) and place it in a vessel in a dark place for a specific period and cover it. After uncovering it, they find that the hand of a person has been imprinted on this vessel, and they call it (the Hand of Fatimah). They divide it among themselves and seek blessing from it, and they supplicate to Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with her), to bring blessing to the water and protect the children. We ask you to clarify the ruling on this and put it on a separate sheet to be sent to those houses that perform this practice, and may Allah preserve you.
A:It is not permissible to single out the day of 'Ashura for preparing food, nor for displaying adornment, perfuming oneself, or beautifying oneself, nor for giving charity, nor for any of the other things that the people of innovation do. Nor is it permissible to make it a day of sadness and wailing, as the Shi'ah do, and what is prescribed in thisthe Shi'ah, and what is prescribed in this
The day is to fast it, fasting the day before it or the day after it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted it and ordered its fasting along with fasting the day before it or the day after it, in order to differ from the Jews . As for supplicating to Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or calling for aid from her or from any other of the dead, that is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) and a sin that is not forgiven except by repentance to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). It is greatly forbidden on the day of Ashura or any other day. As for the practice of henna in a dark place and what is mentioned as resulting from it, that is among superstitions and misguidance and means of shirk, so it must be believed to be invalid and one must not pay attention to it.
