Praying while letting one’s garment hang below the ankles

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of the fatwa numbered ( 19497 )
Q 4: If a man stands to pray and he is wearing (trousers that are hanging below the ankles) and he tucks them up during the prayer, does this fall under the prohibition of tucking up the garment? If it does fall under the prohibition, then if he does not tuck them up, he will be letting them hang below the ankles during the prayer. So should he tuck them up or leave them hanging? And if he believes that the forbidden aspect of letting the garment hang is only when it is for arrogance? If the sleeves (plural of sleeve) are originally long, and he tucks them up before the prayer and is tucking them up when he wants to pray, is that prohibited? And does (the shemagh) fall under the meaning of the garment such that tucking it up is prohibited?
A 4: It is forbidden for men to wear long garments that reach below the ankles, whether the garment is a thobe, a shirt, trousers, or pants, and whether the intention of the one letting it hang is arrogance or not; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار فهو في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
reported by
al-Bukhari in (his Sahih) and Imam Ahmad in (his Musnad), and due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Three people whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at them, nor purify them, and for them is a painful punishment: the one who lets his garment hang below the ankles, the one who is stingy with what he gives, and the one who swears falsely to sell his goodsثلاثة لا يكلمهم الله يوم القيامة ولا ينظر إليهم ولا يزكيهم ولهم عذاب أليم: المسبل إزاره والمنان في ما أعطى، والمنفق سلعته بالحلف الكاذب
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 17:195
reported by Imam Muslim in (his Sahih, vol. 1, p. 102) and Imam Ahmad in (the Musnad). Accordingly, it is not permissible for him to pray while letting his garment hang below the ankles; rather, it is obligatory for him to change them for garments that are above the ankles to the middle of the shin. If he is unable to do so, he must raise the pants to the top before entering the prayer, such that they are above the ankles. However, if he prays while letting his garment hang, his prayer is valid in itself, but he commits a sin by doing what Allah has forbidden him, and he must repent with sincere repentance from this action. It is disliked for him to tuck up these pants or raise them to the top during the prayer, and likewise tucking up the sleeves, due to what came in the two Sahihs from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
I was commanded to prostrate on seven bones, and not to tuck up my garment or my hairأمرت أن أسجد على سبعة أعظم، وأن لا أكف ثوبًا ولا شعرًا
Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:211
The intended meaning of tucking up is gathering and folding so that they do not fall on the ground in his place of prayer, and this includes tucking up the shemagh and similar garments. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
