The reciter: "Praying with his garment hanging below the ankles. He said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4086Da'if (Al-Albani) Abu Dawud narrated it with a sound chain according to the conditions of Muslim ".
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have previously mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) clarified that whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him, and that Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection, nor speak to him, nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment. We also clarified that what is below the ankles is in the Fire, and that this is among the major sins, and that it is not permissible for a person to wear clothes that hang below the ankles. As for what is at the level of the ankles, meaning at the height of the ankles, there is no harm in it. Likewise, what rises to the middle of the leg; everything between the middle of the leg and the ankles is among the garments in which there is a dispensation, and a person is in a state of ease and permissibility if he wears an izar, trousers, a shirt, or a shawl that is between that range. As for what descends below the ankles, it is forbidden in all cases, and indeed it is among the major sins. Then the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding a person who prays while his garment is hanging below the ankles, meaning he has let his garment, trousers, izar, or shawl that covers him—meaning it is not thin or transparent—hang down. The scholars differed on whether his prayer is valid or not. Some of the scholars said: His prayer is not valid because he wore a forbidden garment, and Allah, Glorified and Exalted, only permitted us to wear what He has made lawful for us. So His saying:[Al-A'raf 7:31] means: your garments, referring to what He has permitted and made lawful for us. As for what He has forbidden for us, we are not commanded to do it, but rather we are prohibited from it. Those who say that Allah does not accept his prayer if he lets his garment hang below the ankles cited as evidence this hadith mentioned by the author from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man with his garment hanging below the ankles, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: So he went and performed wudu, then he returned, and he said: Then a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "O Messenger of Allah, you ordered him to perform wudu" He said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 76Sahih (Darussalam) The author says: "Abu Dawud narrated it with a sound chain according to the conditions of Muslim" But there is a consideration regarding this, for the hadith is weak and not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The correct opinion of the scholars is that the prayer of the one who lets his garment hang below the ankles is valid, but he is sinful. Similarly, one who wears a garment that is forbidden for him, such as a garment that a person stole and prayed with, or a garment with images in it, such as a cross, or with images of animals; all of this is forbidden to wear in prayer and outside of prayer. If he prays, the prayer is valid, but he is sinful for wearing it. This is the stronger opinion in this issue, because the prohibition here is not a prohibition specific to prayer, meaning wearing the forbidden garment is general in prayer and other matters, so it is not specific to it, and thus it does not invalidate it. This is the rule adopted by the majority of the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them), and it is the correct rule. And if this hadith were authentic, it would have settled the dispute, but it is weak.
