Fatwa No. ( 15618 )
Q: What is the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the sermon (of the preacher)?
A: The guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his sermon was that he would deliver the Friday sermon from the pulpit after it was established. When he ascended the pulpit, he would face the people and say, "Peace be upon you." When he delivered the sermon, his eyes would redden, his voice would rise, and his anger would intensify, as if he were warning an army, saying, "You have been given the morning and the evening." He would say, "As for what follows, the best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The worst of matters are those that are newly invented, and every religious innovation is misguidance." He would not deliver a sermon without beginning it with praise of Allah. He frequently delivered sermons
using the Qur'an. His sermons centered on praising Allah, extolling Him for His blessings, favors, and attributes of perfection, and teaching the foundations of Islam. He would mention Paradise, Hellfire, and the Hereafter, and enjoin the mindfulness of Allah the Exalted. He would clarify the sources of His anger and the places of His pleasure. He generally strove for brevity, as it is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of the sermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermonإن طول صلاة الرجل وقصر خطبته مئنة من فقهه، فأطيلوا الصلاة وأقصروا الخطبة
Sahih Muslim 869
narrated by Muslim in (his Sahih). When he forbade something committed by some individuals, he did not name anyone specifically; rather, he would say, "What is the matter with men who say such and such?" He would deliver sermons at all times according to the needs and interests of the audience. He would sometimes shorten his sermon according to the needs of the people. His occasional sermons were longer than his regular sermons. He would deliver sermons to women separately on the festivals at times, encouraging them to give charity and to seek forgiveness frequently. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
