The first question of Fatwa No. ( 21677 )
Q 1: Our Lord, Mighty and Majestic, says:
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
[Al-Hajj 22:46]
, and He, Exalted is He, says in another verse:
This [Qur'an] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.
[Ibrahim 14:52]
. In the first verse of Surat al-Hajj, Allah mentioned that it is the hearts that reason, while in the second verse, He, Exalted is He, specifically mentioned those of understanding (who are those of intellect) in the context of remembrance. What is the secret of the distinction between these two terms: (the heart and the intellect), especially since some people take Allah’s, Exalted is He, specific mention of those of intellect in this way as a pretext to refute and interpret the correct, explicit hadiths—sometimes those that are not definitive in meaning—under the claim of subjecting them to the judgment of the intellect, and because Allah praised those of intellect in many verses, they consider submission to the apparent meaning of the authentic hadiths
to be a deviation from the truth. Please inform us, may Allah have mercy on you, about the role of the intellect in understanding the verses of Allah, Exalted is He. .

A 1: There is no contradiction between the two verses; because the intellect originates from the heart and has a connection to the brain, as established by the most discerning of the scholars. The clear intellect does not conflict with authentic transmission; if they do conflict, then there is a defect in one of them. Furthermore, not everything that comes in the texts is grasped by the intellect, so it is obligatory to prioritize the transmission; because the transmission is protected from error, while the intellect is deficient and not protected from error. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
