Q: We have in our village some customs related to the pilgrim who is performing Hajj for the first time, and they call it: (Sarur) , and his family engages in some customs, some of which occur before his arrival and some after. As for those before his arrival: 1- The women from his relatives and neighbors gather to stay up in his house and sing loudly, which the men may hear, and sometimes
mixing occurs, and this gathering takes place on the night of the festival and the two nights following it, and this custom is called (al-Mudriyah) or (al-Darrayah). 2- They prepare a new bed with its furnishings exclusively for him, on which no one else sits. As for those after his arrival: 1- They fire guns to announce their joy at his return. 2- They place a green flag on their houses to indicate that he returned safely. What is your opinion, Your Eminence, regarding this? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: These actions performed before the pilgrim's arrival and after his arrival are all blameworthy and forbidden; it is not permissible to do them or to approve of them, and they are from the actions of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Therefore, it is obligatory to prevent them and refrain from carrying them out; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718b . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
