Fatwa No. ( 16964 )
Q: Many people live in superstitions, religious innovations, and the darkness of ignorance. Some of them come for Hajj and recite the following supplication after Tawaf and after visiting the Holy City of Madinah. Some scholars say: This supplication is from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr (disbelief), and Allah knows best. We ask you for a correct answer. May Allah bless you in both worlds. The text of the supplication is: (Grant me death as a Muslim and join me with the righteous by Your mercy,
O Most Merciful of the merciful. We are Your guests, O Messenger of Allah, and Your visitors. We have come to fulfill Your right and to seek blessing in visiting You and to seek intercession for what has burdened our backs and darkened our hearts. We have no intercessor other than You whom we hope for, and no hope for us other than Your door which we reach. So forgive us and intercede for us to your Lord, and ask Him to bestow upon us all our requests and gather us in the company of His righteous servants, scholars, and doers of good. O Allah, I ask You and turn to You by Your Prophet, our master Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy. O Messenger of Allah, I turn to You to my Lord in this need of mine to fulfill it. O Allah, so let him intercede for me. And may Allah send prayers upon the best of His creation, our master Muhammad, and his family and all his companions).
A: This supplication indicates great ignorance, and the one who makes it is in great danger; because it contains shirkiyyah (polytheistic) and bid'ah (innovative) phrases. It is obligatory to abandon this supplication and similar invented supplications that contain shirkiyyah and bid'ah phrases. It is not permissible to make supplication with it after Tawaf, nor after the visit, nor in any other place. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Ummah (community) how to make supplication and its etiquettes, and he blocked the paths of shirk and bid'ah. In that is sufficiency for the one whom Allah guides and who strives to follow the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and hold fast to the pure Shari'ah. The Messenger is only asked for intercession and supplication during his life (peace and blessings be upon him) in this world, and likewise on the Day of Resurrection when the believers ask him to intercede for them. As for after death and before the resurrection, it is not permissible; rather, it is shirk. And Allah knows best.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
