The first and third questions of Fatwa No. ( 16098 )
Q1: What is the ruling in the religion regarding collective dhikr inside the mosque, standing with a loud voice, swaying during the dhikr, and turning off the lights ? Is it permissible to recite dhikr using a single name, such as: Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting, the Subduer? Are there any hadiths reported on this?
A1: Collective dhikr with a single voice by a group is a religious innovation (bid'ah), whether it is in the mosque or elsewhere, with the lights on or off—it is all bid'ah; because no dhikr of this description was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718b . Likewise, dhikr using a single name is bid'ah and does not count as dhikr; because it is not in a useful phrase.
