The first question of Fatwa No. ( 16370 )
Q 1: Is Iblis from the jinn or from the angels , and are the jinn from his offspring, or is he and his offspring created from them?
A 1: Iblis is from the jinn, as Allah the Exalted said:
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lordوَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلا إِبْلِيسَ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِ
[Al-Kahf 18:50]
, and he is not from the angels. Also, he was created from fire, while the angels were created from light, as the verses regarding the creation of Iblis indicate. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that he said:
The Angels were born out of light and the Jinns were born out of the spark of fire and Adam was born as he has been defined (in the Qur'an) for youخُلقت الملائكة من نور، وخُلق الجان من مارج من نار، وخُلق آدم مما وصف الله لكم
Sahih Muslim 2996
It was narrated by Imam Muslim in his (Sahih). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
