Fatwa number ( 7815 ):
Q: Is Iblis from the jinn or from the angels?
A: Iblis is from the jinn, not from the angels. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Kahf 18:50] the verse, and He said: [Ar-Rahman 55:14-15] , and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 2996 narrated by Muslim, and al-Hasan al-Basri said: (Iblis was never among the angels for even the blink of an eye, and he is the origin of the jinn, just as Adam (peace be upon him) is the origin of mankind) narrated by Ibn Jarir with a sound chain from him. However, Iblis betrayed his nature, for he was with the angels and imitated them, worshipping and practicing devotion with them. Therefore, he was included in their address, but he disobeyed by defying Allah’s command to prostrate. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q: Is Iblis from the jinn or from the angels?
A: Iblis is from the jinn, not from the angels. Allah the Exalted said:
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلا إِبْلِيسَ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ(14) He created man from clay like [that of] pottery. (15) And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.
خَلَقَ الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ (14) وَخَلَقَ الْجَانَّ مِنْ مَارِجٍ مِنْ نَارٍThe Angels were born out of light and the Jinns were born out of the spark of fire and Adam was born as he has been defined (in the Qur'an) for you
