The questioner : What is your opinion of those who say regarding the statement of Allah the Exalted:
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees وإذ قلنا للملائكة اسجدوا لآدم فسجدوا إلا إبليس
[Al-Baqarah 2:34]
The exception here indicates that Iblis was among the angels?

The Shaykh : Yes, we respond to this by saying that Allah the Exalted said:
and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lordفسجدوا إلا إبليس كان من الجن ففسق عن أمر ربه
[Al-Kahf 18:50]
And that he was among the angels, meaning he was included in their group with them, but his element is different from their element. For this reason, he returned to his element, which is fire, and they returned to their element, which is that they were created from light.
