Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. And after that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed the question submitted by the honorable head of the al-Qaryat court, regarding what was stated in the letter from the head of the al-Qaryat municipality to His Eminence the General President, which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat with number (67 \ 2) on 14 \ 1 \ 1400 AH. The text of the question is: We inform your eminence that the acting director of the hospital in al-Qaryat came to the municipality today and requested the poisoning of the cats in the hospital due to their large numbers, as they are harming the patients, specifically the burn victims. He mentioned that a cat attempted to eat the ear of one of the burn victims.
We hope that you will look into this and inform us whether it is permissible to kill cats by poisoning them or not?
A : If the situation is as described regarding the danger of the cats, and it is not possible to protect the patients from their harm or to avoid their evil and get rid of their danger except by eliminating them, then it is permissible to kill them by the easiest and mildest means of eliminating them; such as poison, shooting, or the like. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
