Fatwa No. ( 15680 )
Q: I inform you that I have made a vow upon myself that when a child is born to me, I will hold a celebration, which consists of a party involving slaughtering animals and music, such as wedding celebrations. Do I have to fulfill my vow or not?
A: The vow mentioned contains a vow of obedience, which is slaughtering the animals, if you intended by it to draw near to Allah by slaughtering them and giving away their meat in charity. It also contains a vow of disobedience, which is holding the music, play, and amusement. You must fulfill the vow of obedience, which is slaughtering the animals and carrying out the obedience you intended by slaughtering them. As for the vow of disobedience, it is not permissible for you to fulfill it, and you must expiate for it with the expiation for an oath, which is: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you do not find the means to do so, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
