Vows Made to Other Than Allah the Exalted

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 8987 )
Q: I inform you that I have been married for seven years and have sat without offspring from this lawful spouse, and my family said: “Fulfill the vow of so-and-so Shaykh.” Now, our Lord has honored me with a child, and I have purchased the vow that I vowed and it is with me now. I ask your eminence to respond to me: after I have vowed, do I or do I not? Inform me now: do I fulfill it or not?
A: It is forbidden to make a vow to other than Allah the Exalted. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who slaughters for other than Allah and said:
and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.من نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam)
Therefore, it is not permissible for you to fulfill it, nor to make a vow in the future to other than Allah; because a vow is an act of worship, which is not permissible except for Allah alone, just as prayer and slaughter and the like. And upon you is
repentance to Allah, Glorified is He, for what occurred from you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
