The questioner : He says to me: "An amount of money was deposited in an institution, and I withdrew eight thousand riyals from it as zakat on all my deposited money. When I took it, I began distributing it to those entitled to receive it. I gave one person five hundred riyals and another one thousand riyals. I left the rest with a group of items I had purchased and placed everything in my car's trunk. I headed home, and on the way, I found a stranded person who gestured to me that he wanted a ride. I stopped and let him into the trunk. After traveling a distance, he asked me to stop so he could get out, and I did so, and he got out. When I arrived home and unloaded the items from the car, I remembered that I had left the remaining money, which is the rest of the zakat, in the trunk. I searched for it but did not find it. Perhaps that passenger took it, or it fell out. What is the ruling in this case? And what is obligatory for me?"
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. These dirhams that you set aside to pay the zakat on your wealth, of which you paid one thousand five hundred, and the rest you placed in the car's trunk and then lost, you must pay the equivalent of what you lost, because this money did not reach its rightful recipient, so it remains in your ownership until it reaches its rightful recipient. Accordingly, you are required to pay six thousand five hundred as the zakat on your wealth. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
