The first question of Fatwa number ( 19618 )
Q1: I am a man who got married, and my wife became pregnant. Two months before her delivery, I said to her: "If Allah grants me a child, I promise you a camel," without knowing whether it would be a boy or a girl ? Is this wording permissible or invalid, and do I have to give him a she-camel or a camel along with the two sheep, or not?
A1: If your intention was that if Allah grants you a male child, you would slaughter the camel and give its meat in charity to the poor, then this is a vow of obedience, and it is obligatory to fulfill it if the intended condition is met; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Himمن نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6696
. It is also prescribed for you to slaughter the prescribed 'aqiqah, which is: two sheep for a male, and one for a female, on the seventh day of birth. If the seventh day is missed, it is prescribed to slaughter the 'aqiqah at any time. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
