Fatwa No. ( 20695 )
Q: I am a man who is engaged, and I was afflicted with an illness at some point. Now I have recovered, praise be to Allah. After that, I learned that my fiancée had vowed to fast for three months upon my recovery . I ask for your assistance in this matter: Is there an expiation for this vow, and what is it if there is one? If there is no expiation, is it permissible to divide it into stages?
A: It is obligatory for your fiancée to hasten to fulfill her vow; for it is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 . If, when she made her vow, she specified certain months or intended to fast them consecutively, then it is obligatory for her to fast them consecutively as she vowed. If she did not intend that and was general in her vow, she may separate them and fast ninety days, even if they are scattered, and there is no expiation for her other than that, whenever she is able to do so. I advise your fiancée not to make vows in the future; due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding them, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 1639c . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
