Paying money in lieu of expiation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 5016 )
Q: People have consulted us regarding expiations, such as the expiation for oaths and the ransom for fasting on behalf of an elderly man or woman, and similar cases where the expiation is feeding people. They mention that they cannot find anyone who will accept grains, let alone prepared food, and they ask: Is it permissible for them to pay money in lieu of the expiation, equal to its value? We present this to your Eminence, requesting that you kindly answer with what you see as appropriate in this matter. We ask Allah to reward you with the best reward and to protect you from all that is disliked.
A: It is not permissible to pay money in lieu of the expiation for oaths, nor for the ransom for fasting on behalf of an elderly man or woman, nor for any other expiations, nor for the sacrificial animal, nor for the ransom for harm in Hajj and 'Umrah, according to the correct opinion of the scholars. It must be given from what the Shari'ah has specified to those who accept it and are entitled to it. It is not known by custom or in reality that no one accepts anything but money. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
