Paying money in lieu of expiation
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of fatwa number ( 3568 )
Q 1: I received a fatwa from Your Eminence regarding a broken oath on my part, and you stated in the answer: fast for three days, or if you are unable, then feed ten poor people or clothe them. I spent money on ten poor people, and I am safe in the care of Allah the Exalted, but it was money, not food. You know, O honorable Shaykh, that in our time people are in abundance, praise be to Allah, and if I had spent food, some of them would not have accepted it from me. So I preferred to spend money instead of feeding them. Is the expiation permissible or not?
A 1: It is not permissible to pay money in lieu of expiation; rather, it is obligatory for you to expiate the broken oath mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Ma'idah 5:89] And what you mentioned to us in the question, that we answered you with the fatwa you referred to, is a reversal of the fatwa. The fatwa is: feed ten poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), or clothe them, or free a believing slave.
If you do not find [a slave], then you fast for three days, and the best is that they be consecutive. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

A 1: It is not permissible to pay money in lieu of expiation; rather, it is obligatory for you to expiate the broken oath mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.
