The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2307 )
Q 1: What is the expiation for an oath?
A 1: Allah (Mighty and Majestic) explained the expiation for an oath in His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Ma'idah 5:89] The feeding mentioned is: giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the land, such as dates or others, or providing them with a midday or evening meal from the middle of what a person feeds his family. As for clothing, each poor person is given a garment that suffices him for prayer, such as a shirt for each one, or an izar (lower garment) and a rida' (upper garment) if they are accustomed to wearing izar and rida'.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
Q 1: What is the expiation for an oath?
A 1: Allah (Mighty and Majestic) explained the expiation for an oath in His saying, the Exalted:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.
