The Expiation of an Oath: One of Three Things Is Obligatory

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
You are also asking about the expiation of an oath, Your Eminence?
Answer: The expiation of an oath is as Allah stated in His great Book:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oathsلا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ اللَّهُ بِاللَّغْوِ فِي أَيْمَانِكُمْ وَلَكِنْ يُؤَاخِذُكُمْ بِمَا عَقَّدْتُمُ الأَيْمَانَ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ إِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَاكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ذَلِكَ كَفَّارَةُ أَيْمَانِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ وَاحْفَظُوا أَيْمَانَكُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 89], the verse. So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, made clear that the expiation of an oath is:
the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slaveإِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَاكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ
[Al-Ma'idah: 89]. So one of the three is obligatory:
The obligation is either feeding ten poor people.
Or clothing them.
Or freeing a slave.
The feeding is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), meaning approximately one and a half kilograms of the food that he and his family consume in the country, such as rice, wheat, dates, barley, or other such staple foods of the people of the country. It should be of medium quality, not the worst and not the best, but of medium quality. He feeds them as he feeds his family, or he clothes them with clothing that suffices them for prayer, such as a shirt or an izar (lower garment) and rida' (upper garment), or he frees a male or female slave. If he is unable to do all of that, he fasts three days only, and it is better if they are consecutive. Yes.
