The Manner of Expiation for an Oath

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In the case of expiating an oath, or feeding ten poor people, or freeing a slave, how do I feed ten poor people? Is it based on the number of people, five, or less, or more? And how do I free a slave? Of what type? Please inform us.

Answer:
If a person owes the expiation for an oath, or the expiation for zihar, the expiation for an oath offers a choice between three options: either feeding ten poor people, where each poor person receives half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the local staple food, such as dates, rice, or the like. Ten people, each receiving half a sa', which is one and a half kilograms for each of the ten. Or clothing them with a garment that suffices them for prayer, such as an izar (loincloth) and a rida' (cloak), or a shirt. Or freeing a believing slave, if that is feasible. This is for the oath. If he is unable to do any of these three things, he must fast for three days, and they must be consecutive.
As for zihar, if a man commits zihar with his wife and she becomes forbidden to him: he must free a believing slave if that is feasible. If he is unable to do so, he must fast for two consecutive months before he touches her. If he is unable to do that, he must feed sixty poor people, where each poor person receives half a sa' of dates, or other local staple food, approximately one and a half kilograms, before he touches her. This is the expiation for zihar.
