Expiation for an Oath
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18805 )
Q1: One of my female colleagues at work proposed marriage to her, but her father refused, saying: “She is already engaged,” which is not true. I went to her and stood before her, holding a mushaf in my right hand, and I said to her: “I pledge you by the Great Allah and by this noble mushaf that I will not be tied to any woman except after you marry someone other than me, or you tell me that you do not want me.” Knowing that I had repeated the attempt with her father but to no avail, and now there is a girl before me whom I fully desire to propose to and marry. What is the ruling on what I said to that girl, and what should I do? Guide us and direct us, may Allah reward you a thousand times over.
A1: Expiate for your oath and marry whom you wish from righteous wives. The expiation for an oath is: feeding ten poor people, each with one and a half kilograms of the food eaten in your country, or clothing them, giving each poor person a shirt or a lower garment and a cloak, or freeing a believing slave. If you cannot find [a slave to free], then you must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
a poor person half a kilo of edible food in your country, or clothing for each poor person, such as a shirt or a lower garment and a cloak, or freeing a believing slave. If you do not find the means to do so, then you must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
