Fatwa No. ( 12593 )
Q: How can a Muslim get rid of the sin of estrangement and severing ties if he has a dispute with his Muslim brother? Is it sufficient for him to greet him? If the other person does not return the greeting, is the first person’s conscience cleared of the sin of estrangement? If a Muslim wrongs and harms his Muslim brother with words or actions, what should the one who was wronged do so that there is no severing of ties between them? Should he go to the wrongdoer and speak to him, even if he thinks this shows weakness on his part, and the wrongdoer may persist in harming him? What should be done? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A: First: The pure Shari'ah commands instilling love among Muslims and encourages them to show affection, mercy, and maintain contact with one another so that their affairs are set right, their hearts are purified, and they become one hand against others. It also warned them against enmity and hatred, prohibited severing ties and cutting off relations among them, and made severing ties for more than three days forbidden. In (the two Sahihs) and others, it is narrated from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2560a And in (Sunan al-Tirmidhi ), it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2508Hasan (Darussalam) Meaning: The religion is severed.
Second: It is obligatory for a Muslim, if enmity arises between him and his Muslim brother, to go to him, greet him, and be gentle with him in repairing the relationship between them. For in that lies a great reward and safety from sin. Abu Dawud narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4913Hasan (Al-Albani) And in (Sahih Muslim) and elsewhere, it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said: Sahih Muslim 2565c . If the one who was wronged by insults and harm is convinced that reconciling with the wrongdoer will increase his evil and harm, he should leave him alone; to avoid his obscenity, to preserve his dignity, and to stay away from evil and its causes. Third: Muslims should strive to repair relationships, especially between those who are in dispute. They should encourage them to reconcile and explain to them the virtue of forgiveness and the great reward therein. Allah the Exalted said: [Ash-Shuraa 42:40] ,
And in (Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud), it is narrated from Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2509Da'if (Darussalam) . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
