Q: Do we say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the best of humans or the best of creation? And is there evidence that he is the best of creation, as many people say?
A: Many texts from the Book and the Sunnah explain the great status of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his high rank with his Lord the Exalted, through the noble virtues and honorable characteristics that Allah granted him. This indicates that he is the best of creation, the most honorable to Allah, and the greatest in rank with Him the Exalted. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:113] The types of excellence by which Allah distinguished him are difficult to enumerate fully. Among them: Allah the Mighty and Majestic chose him as a close friend, made him the seal of His messengers, revealed to him the best of His books, made his message universal for the two groups of jinn and humans until the Day of Resurrection, forgave him what had passed of his sin and what remained, and caused signs to occur through his hands that surpassed all the prophets before him. He is the master of the descendants of Adam , the first from whom the grave will split open, the first intercessor, the first to be interceded for, he holds the banner of praise on the Day of Resurrection, he is the first to cross the Sirat! He is the first to knock on the door of Paradise, and the first to enter it... and so on of
the characteristics and miracles mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah, which led the scholars to agree that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the greatest of creation in rank with Allah the Exalted. The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Muslims have agreed that he (peace and blessings be upon him) is the greatest of creation in rank with Allah; no created being has a greater rank than his, and no intercession is greater than his." From what has been mentioned and other things, it becomes clear that our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the best of the prophets, indeed the best of creation, and the greatest in rank with Allah the Exalted. However, despite these great virtues and characteristics, he (peace and blessings be upon him) does not rise above the level of humanity. Therefore, it is not permissible to supplicate to him or call upon him for aid other than Allah the Mighty and Majestic, as the Exalted said:[Al-Kahf 18:110] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
