The seventh question of Fatwa number ( 3543 )
Q7: Whatis the ruling on the one who backbites people by attributing to them what they do not have, and I hear the word (al-buhtan), so what is its meaning?
A7 : Backbiting is mentioning your brother with what is in him, which he dislikes, and if you mention him with what is not in him, which he dislikes, that is al-buhtan (false accusation), and both are forbidden. The Exalted said:[Al-Hujurat 49:12] , in this verse is the prohibition of backbiting, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it, as well as al-buhtan. It was narrated by Muslim and Abu Dawud from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Riyad as-Salihin 1523 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

وَلاَ يَغْتَبْ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا"Do you know what is backbiting?" The Companions said: "Allah and His Messenger know better." Thereupon he said, "Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes." It was said to him: "What if my (Muslim) brother is as I say." He said, "If he is actually as you say, then that is backbiting; but if that is not in him, that is slandering."
