Questions twenty-seven and twenty-eight from Fatwa number ( 11967 )
Q 27: Is it permissible for a Muslim to make friends with Christians, and what are the limits of such friendship ?
A 27: It is not permissible to take disbelievers as friends or close allies, but it is not permissible to deal with them in a way that contradicts the pure Shari'ah. Rather, it is prescribed to deal with them with kindness, good speech, and argument in the best manner; for Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:83] the verse from Surat al-Baqarah, and He the Glorious said: [Ali 'Imran 3:159] , and He the Exalted said: [Al-'Ankabut 29:46] the verse from Surat al-'Ankabut

And speak to people good [words]
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.
And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them
